As Trump withdraws from diplomacy, others will fill the void.[/quote]
Actually, I just wish that this observation–at least, the predicate, contained in the first clause–were true.
President Trump has shown far more of a penchant for diplomacy with North Korea than I would.
In fact, I would entirely take off the table the following: (1) diplomacy (it has been ineffective); (2) sanctions (also ineffective); and (3) any acquiescence to North Korea’s becoming a nuclear power (Kim Jong-un is far too unstable for that).
Some would say that this leaves only war as an option.
But that is not necessarily true.
There is also the possibility of our taking out Kim Jong-un.
True, this is rather problematic; the chief problem here being our tacit endorsement of the idea that regicide (or the modern equivalent thereof) is perfectly acceptable. This could very well induce others to respond in kind, if they did not like our own Commander-in-Chief.
But given the likely alternative–i.e. the deaths of hundreds of thousands (and perhaps even over a million) innocents in a nuclear war, this does seem like a reasonable choice.
To me, at least.
