I have no clue who nailed Equifax, but my working theory is that it was the Russians.
But so far all the talk, or mostly all the talk, is about how the hack affects individuals.
But imagine you wanted to attack the USA. If you had the financial data on 143,000,000 Americans you could do real damage.
You could, say, put a freeze on the credit of 143,000,000 Americans. That would freeze commerce. And that would be a hell of an attack.
The point is that the personal information of, basically, every adult that participates in the US economy is stolen. The scale is staggering. When we stop freaking out about our own credit, we can start to think how deeply nefarious this could be.
Would Putin love, love, love to have all that data? You bet your bottom (compromised) dollar he would. If it wasn’t Putin’s boys who did this, I’m betting his sleuths are looking for who did. And they’d pay handsomely for the data.
