I have been harassing my rep, Duncan Hunter, but I finally signed up for email updates, because I want to know when he will hold a town hall. I have various questions I would like him to answer in public:
Will you seek revenues to support Social Security and Medicare or will you make them weaker?
Will you support investigating all accusations concerning Russian involvement and hacking?
Will you support investigating the FBI’s malfeasance concerning the investigation of Hillary Clinton?
While I’m not sure my neighbors care that much, I might raise this issue—Hunter announced that for Fiscal Year 2018, he will not submit any federal appropriations requests on behalf of states, cities, universities or other entities that have an ordinance, policy or practice in place that undermines the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
I think he is on thin legal ground, and sent him an email pointing out that the Court had set a pretty clear line between the federal government’s role in enforcing the borders, and the states’ obligations or powers. I doubt it is legal to punish cities as Hunter proposes. While the fed can threaten to withhold education funding if a school district does not support Title 9, I doubt it can stiff states at will.
