Swing-vote Justice Kennedy retires from US Supreme Court

#41

Time to call it like it is: the President might have conspired with a hostile nation, and none of his judicial nominees should get a hearing until that matter is cleared up.

We can not afford a compromised Justice on the Supreme Court. Vladimir Putin does not get to advise on a second Justice.

#42

Dems need to do what McConnell did to them. Refuse to meet with the nominee, refuse to attend any hearings, and throw up roadblocks where ever they can. They will probably lose anyway, but they need to show they can fight.

To quote Santino Corleone, “No, No more! No more meetin’s, no more discussions, no more talking.”

Also, put the Republicans on notice, from Bush V. Gore, through Heller, Citizens United, to the Merrick Garland travesty, they’ve had enough, the very first time the Democrats control the Senate, the House and the Presidency, the Supreme Court will be enlarged to a number to erase their ill gotten gains.

#43

Anybody want to make a bet that it will be a pale male?

#44

@JustErin remember that Kennedy is a centrist and a moderate the same way McCain is a liberal.

He was at times a bit of an unpredictable iconoclast, but remember even Roberts voted not to overturn Obamacare.

The fact that they aren’t corrupt lunatics all the time doesn’t make them anything but utterly corrupt hard-right political operatives pretending to interpret the law.

#45

Guess you now see the ramifications of choosing a piss poor candidate to run for president.

The right truly thanks all of Hillary’s supporters.

Do you really think Hillary would have been the candidate without the support of the super delegates subverting the will of the democrat party members? Talk about corrupt.

Who was it that said toPresident Dmitri Medvedev of Russia he would have “more flexibility” after the election?

And you should really get over it, 2 years later, 17 million so far, no collusion, 13 Russians indicted which is a joke as they will never face trial, and of course indictments for non related OLD crimes and of course a ham sandwich.

50 votes to confirm in the Senate . Elections have consequences President Trump will probable appoint at least three new Supreme Court justices !

#48

I hope it’s the most qualified person for the job and not a diversity hire. Thx.

#49

And Kagan was nominated and placed on the SCOTUS in a swing section year, 2010.

Perhaps she also should have been blocked or the nominee should receive the same consideration she had.

However every good progressive wants to further their case and politicize the court.

#50

Mike Lee of Utah, United States Senator might be a quick appointment ?

#51

They don’t need any Democratic votes to confirm. Confirmation requirement is 50. The reason McConnell was able to squash Garland’s nomination is because Republicans were in the majority. McConnell could schedule a vote tomorrow, if he really wanted to. Democrats need 2 Senators, under the assumption that McCain won’t be well enough to attend and vote. Don’t know if we have them. What will be really cool is when Democrats capture the 3 seat that they need and McConnell sets a confirmation vote for the lame duck session, before the new Senators are seated.

#52

There will be nothing nice about this appointment or cycle.

#53

You probable haven’t noticed there hasn’t been anything nice about this Presidency .
That’s why he was elected !

#54

Agreed, but how to make that happen???

#55

A young one that can be there 45 years.

#56

I mean really, what if the Mueller investigation ends up showing that Trump worked with a hostile foreign power to install him as president? Then what happens to the SCOTUS justices he illegitimately appointed?

#57

The President was elected and as President his duty is to nominate Supreme Court Justices , with Senate confirmation, requires Justices to be appointed.

#58

Probably nothing because they will have been through the confirmation process.

#59

Until the opposing party decides to block that claiming that it shouldn’t happen in an election year. (Even though nothing in the constitution supports that)

#60

Presidential election .
The GOP controlled the senate thanks to President Obama’s inept running of the nation .
Barack Obama Won The White House, But Democrats Lost The Country
Obama oversaw the rapid erosion of the Democratic Party’s political power in state legislatures, congressional districts and governor’s mansions. At the beginning of Obama’s term, Democrats controlled 59 percent of state legislatures, while now they control only 31 percent, the lowest percentage for the party since the turn of the 20th century. They held 29 governor’s offices and now have only 16, the party’s lowest number since 1920.
